4/21 3:16 pm - This reel is exciting, but by limiting it to just football and a particular cinematic vision of football it doesn't reflect the vast scale of possibilities available within filmmaking and the cinematographer's toolkit. While the Friday Night Lights is exciting, your treated video, using filters not unlike we would find an Instagram, is frequently distracting, particularly in a format that's supposed to showcase raw camera skills rather than filters available in post production. Nonetheless, your Love of moving images comes across and your passion to tell a story is clear.
4/15 1:57 pm - PROS - Composition & Variety: The reel features a strong range of shots, with thoughtful framing and clear intentionality in subject placement. Many scenes are well-composed, with effective use of background and depth. Color & Visual Quality: Image quality is high throughout the reel, with good resolution and clean colors. Color grading—whether subtle or bold—feels cohesive and supports the emotional tone of the piece. Camera Movement: There are well-executed tracking shots and moments of handheld movement that enhance immersion without being distracting. Movements generally feel motivated and add energy to the visuals. IMPROVEMENTS - Focus Accuracy: Several shots display minor focus inconsistencies, with soft focus on key subjects. Ensuring precise focus, particularly in close-ups or low-light shots, would enhance professional quality. Lighting Control: While there are some scenes with beautifully lit subjects, a few others feel underlit or unevenly exposed. Consistent lighting quality across all scenes would elevate the visual impact. Pacing: Some sequences linger a bit long or feel tonally inconsistent for a reel format. Refining the edit with sharper pacing and transitions would enhance the viewer's experience and better highlight cinematography skills. OVERALL - This reel contains strong cinematography elements and suggests a solid grasp of visual storytelling, but it is currently better suited as a highlight montage or banquet showcase rather than a dedicated cinematography reel. Re-editing for the MMEA submission—under 2 minutes with tighter focus on the most cinematographically rich shots—would strengthen its overall impact.
