Zaramela: Behind the Band

Glenbrook South
Documentary

Entry Description

Zaramela, the Glenview based jazz-rock band, brought together 7 high school students and made them more than just friends. It made them artists.

Judge 1

Positives: 1) Excellent band footage - great coverage and angles! 2) Interview segments were well done - nice touch with multi-angle during one interview!

Improvements: 1) Interview subjects need to be mic'd! Very hard to hear ... 2) Give your interviews a little lighting treatment to make them stand out from captured footage.

Positives: Great work using two cameras for your interviews. That gives you easy edit points and helps keep the interviews fresh looking. Excellent description on the progression of a band. I did a doc on my band in high school and it was 7 minutes of us making fun of each other and acting like idiots. This is very mature and informative.

Improvements: I would have liked to see this documentary flow together a little better. It seemed like the video was made up of sections that were pieced together. Each musician (horns = 1 musician) had their own little part, then it would end, then someone elses part would start. It would have been nice to see everything integrated. Maybe jumping back and forth between interviews or adding questions the whole band can answer when they were all in a group. Keep people out of the lights during interviews. I noticed someone blocking the key light on the drum interview.

Judge 3

Positives: Nice intro. Very interesting was to introduce all of the band members You had some nice creative shots in there. Some in particular were in the recording room, and one was the interview with the mirror behind him

Improvements: The sound was mixed a little unevenly, be careful of that. The drummer interview in particular, because the drums surfaces are reflective you can see someone behind the camera moving several times. Be aware of reflective surfaces.
