ROSE: One Woman's Story

Glenbrook South
Documentary

Entry Description

A moving documentary about Rose Valtos and her story. In the midst of the Pacific theater of WWII, Rose along with her mother and sister found themselves thrust right into the middle of it all. She survived the Japanese invasion of the Philippines to live on to a quiet life today surrounded by her family and husband of many years.

Judge 1

Positives: 1) Very professional presentation - great narrative style that matches modern documentary profiles! 2) Excellent interviews and videography - crisp imagery and nice movement really accentuate the piece!

Improvements: 1) The shot footage looks so sharp that the b-roll is noticeably lower quality - some extra color correction may help. 2) Rose was a great interview, but in the future make sure your subject's eye lines always remain the same - sometimes she was looking off camera other times directly at the lens (pick one - see intro dolly shots for examples).

Positives: Wow. Very impressive piece. The b-roll footage was fantastic. Where did you find those army actors? Kidding. Excellent interview framing. Great lighting, great depth of field. There was so much good information, and it was so descriptive. Great work. "While the houses are still burning" as kids cheer in the background.---2:08 :)

Improvements: The only thing I would say here is, when doing interviews, the subject should be looking just off frame, depending on which way they are facing. Its kind of creepy when they look directly into the lens. It feels like they are looking into your soul. When you ask questions, make sure they are looking and talking to you with the camera over your shoulder.

Judge 3

Positives: Very nice opening. Very well done with the tacking shots, music, narration and move into the graphics. I enjoyed the tracking shot during the interview as well, it adds another dimension to your piece. Nice combination of footage from the war, with old photos from Rose's past. Along with the narration and interviews, everything was tied together very nicely.

Improvements: For the interview segments, perhaps have it a little wider. They feel a little too close to frame.
