Entry Description

A music video to the song - "Hey Joe."

Judge 1

Positives: Really loved the storyline. Very dark. Works on a few different levels. Nice twist with the woman shooting herself instead of the boyfriend doing it (like it says in the song.) I love the sparseness of imagery. This goes quite well with the Nick Cave Version of the song. (Although I really like the Hendrix and Dylan versions, the Cave version definitely is the right choice with this storyline.) The exterior shots (silos, train, etc.) are a creative touch to the emptiness of the story. The rack focuses were an interesting touch. Overall, the editing was really good. The composition of the shots plus the pace and rhythm of the edits carry the slower moving song quite well. The photographs are an important narrative element.

Improvements: The interior shots were a little dark. I presume you were going for the darkness "feel" but some creative lighting would have helped. (Lighting is hard to learn but is so important in establishing mood, setting and atmosphere.) More controlled interior lighting would enhance your composition and visual imagery even more.

Judge 2

Positives: Talent did a great job. Creative story. Nice camera angles and variety of footage. Nice rack focuses throughout.

Improvements: Some interior footage seemed a bit too dark - using more dramatic lighting to create harsh shadows may be better. Video included both warm and cool footage throughout. Cool footage - home interior. Warm footage - exterior sunny day. May be better to include all cool footage to fit style. For example, having talent meet at night. May also be good to put a key at the beginning to inform viewers song details.

Judge 3

Positives: The video was suspenseful with a surprise ending. The pace worked well with the music. I especially like the pan at around 1:00. It seeemed well-planned.

Improvements: The snow scenes were very bright, which didn't exactly fit the mood of the rest of the video. One shot had the couple's heads cut off.
