Oracle

Glenbrook South
Feature Story

Entry Description

The Oracle is Glenbrook South's original, student-run newspaper, with engaging and interesting articles that tackle both big hard-hitting community issues and lighthearted student profiles and stories.

Judge 1

Positives: Nice use of editing - had all the right elements to support the script. Nice use of music to keep flow and set a nice, easy tone.

Improvements: I would have liked more detail! Tell me more about the student newspaper. Include a sound bite from one of the students who works on it. Show a little video of the students writing or interviewing or taking pictures. Tell me how many students are on staff. This would make your segment feel more like a full feature story. When showing a picture of the 2 new Editors in Chief, the over the shoulder graphic worked, but perhaps a full screen graphic and a sentence about each editor would give a fuller feel to the story. Very smooth segment - great effort!

Judge 2

Positives: Nice use of music with the presentation. The use of video to show what is contained on the web site was done very well. Nice use of DVE effects to show the new editors. Co-mingling of facebook social media, and twitter with the Oracle was very professional and forward thinking. The spokesman was very articulate.

Improvements: A few shots of a person on a computer looking at your site, just like you had someone looking at the paper, would have been nice. Show a student actually selecting the Oracle on facebook as well as tweeting. I am glad you saw the need to incorporate all platforms in to your paper, many Newspapers don't and have gone by the wayside.

Judge 3

Positives: Very nice integration of graphics throughout the piece - well done! Short script but to the point - LESS IS MORE!

Improvements: The lighting on Mike is okay - it could have been better had a kick light been used to either back light Mike or create a pattern on the right hand side of the frame and create a bit of separation between Mike and the back wall not lit - but that's a minor criticism. Overall this was a well-executed production.
