Josh Garrels - And What Remains

Batavia
Music Video

Entry Description

This video is just a mix of parts from a 6.5 minute-long music video/narrative. It's an instrumental music video that displays the gospel of Jesus Christ. A man finds a dog (representing an angel) that shows him how corrupt his life is and he soon decides to follow Jesus and turn his life around.

Positives: Interesting video. Really like the concept and storyline. Some of the images and effects are nicely done. The sequence by the tree (where he faces his demons) is really cool. The imagery in that sequence is quite powerful. Great job on props, makeup and effects.

Improvements: I would've like to see the 6.5 minute version because this shorter version could use a stronger narrative and some better connections. If I didn't read your description, I would have never have known the dog represents an angel. (To me it seems like the dog leads him to the woman angel.) Some of the shots could be composed better. (i.e. The shot from behind the main character during the tree sequence--the character blocks some really interesting stuff.

Positives: Love the concept of the video. Very creative visuals at 1:40 - the boy with the TV on his head reminded me of old school MTV! Liked the POV at 1:55. Visual displayed of boy around 3:16 is very symbolic as well - reminded me of Jesus and the apostles sitting around the table. Kept the song mellow so you could accurately punch up the visuals - well done.

Improvements: Include a key at beginning and end of video to give credit. Footage at 0:40 seems to be a bit blue. Be sure to white balance when changing location. Footage of cup game and gambling in the basement appeared a bit too dark - try to iris up, or change the filter. If that doesn't work - add more light around the room.

Judge 3

Positives: Good use of visual dialogue, and it fit the music well. Creative forest scene!

Improvements: The lighting/white balance was inconsistent. A title at the beginning would add to the video and make it look more professional.
