Keeping Up With The Spartans

Glenbrook North
TV Show

Entry Description

This is a student run TV show called "Keeping Up With The Spartans". It is a show that's main purpose is to reveal as many different faces and people around our high school Glenbrook North as possible. From sports coverage, to different eating challenge's, our 13 person staff covers all areas of the school. We are lucky to have our own set of special made graphics for the show, and two committed anchors to lead the way! Take a look.

Positives: I love the opening title sequence. Great use of broll to cover the interviews.

Improvements: Instead of using the full screen cards with the question, produce your subjects so they give you the question in their answer (i.e. "I started juggling when..."or "My favorite trick is...") Most people multi-task while watching tv and they'll miss the cards which means they won't know what's going on and will lose interest. In general, I really liked it - The opening intro seemed stiff - I'd work some banter in between the hosts. Lastly, when you're submitting things for awards/contests/grades, make sure someone with fresh eyes takes a look at all elements - there are punctuation errors in your entry info. Good job!

Judge 2

Positives: Well produced cold open, and I like the song selection. Little details like leaving the Spartan logo in the corner add a professional touch. Good energy and articulation from your hosts. The whole pace and feel of the opening is energetic and upbeat. You also had lots of good, relevant b-roll of your guest.

Improvements: I'd have your hosts introduce themselves and support that with their names and titles in a lower-third. The plain black curtain and lack of any title or graphic for the show or specific story feels like an opportunity missed to make it more visually interesting and informative. I'd also give some thought to the hosts wardrobe. It's not bad, but just looks like no effort was put in. I'm not a big fan of putting the question the guest is answering on a title card. I bet you could have him answer the questions in complete statements that don't require us to read the question in advance. Again, having him stand in front of a black curtain is a bit boring and awkward. You could at least give him a chair or find some other more interesting environment for him to be in.

Positives: Good concept for a show. Camera work for the most part was well done.

Improvements: Music in the background was a bit distracting. Staging of talent needs to be more interesting.
