Deadline: The Musical

Entry Description

I made Deadline as sort of a passion project depicting every student’s struggle in deciding what to do after high school. The short took the better part of a month to write and shoot and I believe it conveys the sense of confusion and meaninglessness I experience in my day to day life. I really tried to show what it’s like to run headfirst into your future without stopping to consider whether or not that is what you really want.

Positives: This piece was very nicely shot. The cutaways were seamless and the use of wide shots--often overlooked--helped establish the world these characters inhabit. I particularly liked the wide shot of the main crossing a field, running out of school and towards camera (3:50) and then the wide to get to the mail box. The time stamps worked as well.

Improvements: The music felt a little over powering. The selections were good, and fit the mood, but I'd consider dipping down a bit and saving it so that you can bring it up as/after the envelope is torn. The shot of the two boys from behind looking out on the field was a nice shot. Could hold it a bit longer.

Judge 2

Positives: Soundtrack rocked. it was really good use of music to convey emotions of the character. loved some of your jump cut sequences.

Improvements: FOCUS....you had an entire scene that was out of focus. I couldn't tell if it was choice. It if it was that message wasn't conveyed clearly to the viewer. Your sound was hard on the ears. easily fixed by mics or re-records. it could have meant the world.
