forkplay

New Trier
Comedic Narrative

Entry Description

Inspired by a trip to the test makeup center, Lincoln picks up a new way to prevent their belongings from being taken away from them. Forks can be for friends, too.

Positives: You clearly have an instinct for the language of cinema. Excellent choice in what to focus the audience's attention on and very sweet story. This is a clear, simple, meaningful idea that you executed well. Great job!

Improvements: Sound cut in and out... not sure if that was intentional.

Judge 2

Positives: I've had to judge a handful of videos so far this competition and I have to say this is my favorite so far. The fact that you focused on the fork like a character was really smart. Also there was a nice build on what got a fork- the phone, the luggage, the dog and the boyfriend/friend. That was nice. The test taking sequence in the beginning was really well done. I applaud you on using static shots. A lot of people try to get away with doing too much handheld, which can be distracting and can take away from the piece. It can also make the audience feel nauseous especially with close up shots. Sounds obvious, but I've seen even professionals do it. This was a fun short to watch, I'd hold onto this one if I were you especially if you are thinking of going into film. You have a good grasp so far, better than some of the college projects I've had to look at. Good job and keep going!

Improvements: Not much I would change really. I think maybe ADR the audio in the beginning. I could hear it fine, but since you don't see the characters actually saying the dialogue, using ADR would make the dialogue more crisp and just up the quality of the piece. I liked the dramatic hold on the wide shot at the end, but it could be cut a little shorter.
