A compilation of the things I saw and the places I went in 2015.
Positives: You've mastered the flare. There is room for a more nuanced flare - reflected in train windows as it moves past, or thru train windows, or barely in the frame, or off the water. Excellent work. Now add another way to grant a "cinematography beat" to the image.
Improvements: To diversify looks, you need more lit narrative scene work - specifically wide shots of living rooms, kitchens, bedrooms, etc. With characters in them.
Positives: Beautifully captured human moments, and displayed a clear understanding of lighting tone, shot composition, and movement. An extremely well-edited reel with interesting music choice and kineticism. Particularly loved the moments between children and their parents, and the character in the stark white aisles of a store, ominously walking in a black and white sweater. The composition and intentional lack of color in that sequence displays real talent. I really love the opening line of somewhat distorted VO – wonderful editing throughout.
Improvements: Would love to see what this cinematographer could do with more artificial lighting setups, where they must build tone and character with light from scratch. Many of these setups were shot with existing/natural light – which can work in a particular project, but doesn't necessarily display enough variety.
