There have been weird sounds in the night sky, as well as beams of light. Many cows have disappeared without a trace. What could that light be?

  • 3/2 2:16 pm - I have to say, I like this. From a story perspective, I like the set-up more than the resolution, but for a one-minute story, it works well enough for me. This looks like cut paper on a chalkboard(?) which, for whatever reason, works for me. Shooting a blackboard could get dark and muddy, but you use a good key light, so it looks fine to me. I even kind of like the shadows the light casts- reminds me of an animated Ed Wood film. Good music selection(s), and your levels sound fine to me. It’s a pretty simple story, and like I said, I think it wraps up pretty quickly, but I think you’ve got something good here to build on in your next animated project. Keep at it.
  • 2/23 1:05 pm - STORY: Your story was simple and easy to follow. The ending was a bit weak; a stronger conclusion or revelation of the mystery would have been nice. SOUND: Your music bed was very appropriate for this piece. However, you definitely could have added a lot of depth by adding in sound effects. Ambient sounds of night, the cows moving or trying to escape, mooing cows, the sound of the UFO, the sound of the UFO beam capturing cows, and the final explosion would have been very helpful to this piece. CAMERA: Your compositions were great; it's not easy to judge an animated piece in this category, because the craft (in your case, cut paper with stop motion animation) is different from straight camera composition. But you did an excellent job focusing the audience on the essential elements of each shot. LIGHTING: Your lighting was very consistent, and at the right points you added light to create more dramatic tension. Well done. EDITING: Your editing was on point; good pace, and nice flow from one shot to another. FINAL NOTE: It's really too bad that the MMEA killed the animation category (which is really where this piece belongs). You should tell your teacher to petition the MMEA to add the animation category back into the festival next year.
Judge 1

Positives: Animation throwback.

Improvements: Too short to effectively tell the story.

Judge 2

Positives: Fun and engaging story. Simple animation, but effective and fluid.

Improvements: Story seemed to end quite abruptly. Fairly hard to compare to live action shorts. But a worthy effort.
