Entry Description

This is the best of what I filmed over the last year. I implemented elements from both school videos and projects. I am I very colorful cinematographer so I like to use bright colors to make it vibrant. Other cinematographers use more dark dramatic lightining but I believe in trying to use natural light as much as I can. I also like to use telephoto to make the picture really stand out so you can see the detail of the subject in the footage.

  • 4/14 2:02 pm - Positives: I particularly love the time lapse photos and the shot of the pelican--very crisp--great colors. The football shots have nice color and movement. Improvements: Some shots are shaky and have unmotivated camera movement--we are a little unsure of where the camera is going and why.
  • 3/6 10:04 am - love the way you frame things to one side or the other. Some of the clips were a little too fast for the reel.
  • 3/3 3:01 pm - The opening terracotta rooftop, the pelican, and the man taking a picture shots are among my favorites in this reel. For one reason, the color saturation in these images is stunning. Couple that with the dynamic range of the images. These pictures pop off the screen. Last, the images are shot from interesting perspectives. The rooftop picture’s dutch angle with the moving clouds catches the eye. The pelican is remarkably close. Seeing its details is engrossing. The man taking the picture provides the viewer with a PoV and a sense of scale. Other shots, notably the interview shots against the white wall aren’t as strong from a camera operation standpoint. Some shots have soft focus, some shots are noisy. In all the clarity of these images is the polar opposite of the three shots I applauded.
  • 2/28 4:47 pm - A nice variety of shots, but they looked quite different between the football shots on the field to the pep rally to the travel footage. When using multiple different cameras or lenses, it's really important to match your footage as much as possible for a montage like this. The Steadicam footage at the pep rally was nice, but many of the hand held shots were distracting and hard to follow.

Positives: Great event coverage and variety of content.

Improvements: Some focus issues on a few shots. Higher frame rate material doesn't mix so well with more cinematic 24p. Consider slowing that content down?

Judge 2

Positives: The pace of the video was great and the compositions of almost all of the shots were on point.

Improvements: Music was a little distracting and the color grading of some of the shots could have been a bit better.
