Rex is a star athlete who appears to have it all. But to Rex, something is missing. Surrounded by people he's too afraid to be honest with, it will take an outsider to open Rex's eyes and help him find what he's truly looking for.
Positives: Opening tracking shot was effective in establishing the character and environment. Soundtrack choice was spot-on and conveyed the ton of the film. Story is clear.
Improvements: Booming/mic'ing characters during dialogue scenes is crucial, and will immensely help with overall aesthetic and quality of the piece. There were some nice cuts to align the pacing of the soundtrack, but a couple of rough cuts surround the sequences where other students are admiring the protagonist. Lighting was a bit flat overall – build on the available light in the school to enhance particular scenes. When the protagonist and love interest are together, maybe use additional lighting to create warmth and intimacy in the scene. And use colder light during establishing scenes to show his emotional seclusion in 'normal life', and how he wants more. It would also benefit the filmmaker to explore a subject outside of the high school setting.
Positives: - Contrasting scenes and utilizing the voice over with them sitting on the stairs is well done and helps to create real characters with a real relationship—one that has its ups and downs. - Good use of various camera angles and framing as a story telling tool.
Improvements: - the increased pace of the editing is well done to match the music, but should be started after he meets the girl to further emphasize how she changes his life. The faster pace seems inconsistent with his self reflection at that time. - the title cards could be better timed and paced in the footage. At points, they detract rather than add to the trailer.
