Student produced Music Video.
Positives: Camera work. In the abandoned building the shots looked fantastic. The color grading, the framing, the exposure, all of it looked high end and fit the video. Great use of different perspectives, focal lengths and foregrounding. Careful to not overuse lens flares. They're a great in-camera effect and they work stylistically and can add intrigue and value when used sparingly. Any more than that and it becomes distracting and takes the viewer out of the video. This video walked the line. Location. The abandoned building location is beautiful. It's well captured by the photography and is my favorite part of the video
Improvements: Lip Sync. More often than not the sync was off. The performer either didn't hit all the words or he was not in time with the music. A reliable on-location playback is imperative to get this. Additionally, if you are going to attempt a lip sync, make sure you nail it. The fastest way to take a viewer out of your video and make an otherwise good product look amateurish is to have the sync be off. A portable bluetooth speaker or, if necessary, a teleprompter could help remedy this. Rehearsal or multiple takes to ensure you nailed the performance may also be necessary so planning the shoot accordingly will help, too. Cutaways. There are two cutaways in the video that are not motivated by the music, they're not motivated by anything in the piece leading up to them and are colored differently and don't fit in the style of the video established up until the point they appear. If they revealed something the main scene didn't, or told a parallel story, that could have added a tremendous amount of intrigue, but they don't.
Positives: excellent camera work and location choice. The camera pans and use of natural optical flares is great. Great lighting, especially on the darker scenes. Very professional job.
Improvements: It's hard to find anything wrong with this work. The only thing I can really say is the closing scene didn't seem to support the overall story.
