Entry Description

This segment of my short film was shot at Isle Royale National Park in the U.P. of Michigan in the summer of 2015. I spent a week canoe camping on the north shore of the island. During this time I captured some great footage that really shows the park for what it is, truly beautiful.

  • 4/14 2:29 pm - Positives: Overall, your shots are gorgeous. Great camera movement--very smooth and graceful. Nice drone work--very effective for capturing the beauty of this location. I particularly like the shots with the bees. Improvements:While I enjoyed the drone work--it seemed to take up the majority of the reel. I would have liked to see more shot variety.
  • 3/3 3:08 pm - Overall, the images you have here are stunning. Great camera capabilities with gorgeous scenery captivate the eye. But now for the technical considerations. First, I really like your operation of the drone. While you gain elevation you also add pans or arcs that help reveal the natural splendor of the scenery. The images, therefore, unfold themselves in interesting ways. In particular with this, I enjoy how a sublime forest shot will reveal to a welcoming meadow or rolling hillside. Additionally, I like the shots where the camera moves around the jagged fingers of the rocky island. The music was also well chosen for this content. It’s powerful, ethereal melody couples with the images well. The downside of this reel is that it doesn’t demonstrate a diversity of shots or a mastery of lighting techniques, as are requested in the grading criteria of the category.
  • 2/28 5:10 pm - Great montage to the music, the shots hit the beats (for the most part) and really did a nice job telling the visual story of a beautiful place. As great as drones are, they give you often over exposed and undersaturated video. Without sweetening this in post, it really struggles. A little color correction will really help your progression. Since this is a cinematography category, that is a serious issue.
