Hinsdale Central
Dramatic Narrative

Entry Description

A test film I shot to use some new angles and gear. Inspired by shows like Dexter and American Horror Story.

  • 3/2 4:59 pm - My overall critique is that this isn’t a dramatic narrative. Yes, there’s a rudimentary plot- some perhaps Russian(?) man is going to dismember a body with a Sawsall™. But there’s only music. Bottom line: this is half a music video. It’s well shot for the most part. You have some focus issues- for example that high angle POV shot of his feet near the top- and I wish you had better light in some shots. But I like you cool overhead angles. I like your editing on the beats. I like your pacing. I like your overall sense of style. I think you have solid filmmaking skills. I just wish this fit into this category better.

It's a shame that you didn't MAKE a story; introduce the character, why is he doing this, who is in the body bag, and what happens afterwards. You know...like a story with characters and a plot. This would have made a dope music video though, which doesn't require much story anyway because it can be more abstract. SOUND: One song, no sound effects, no ambient sound, no voice over, no dialogue. So....yeah, this is a music video. CAMERA: Your shots are clean and interesting. Well done. LIGHTING: Your lighting is sufficient for exposure, which is better than a lot of entries, but you have little dramatic lighting for such an intense scene. Why was that work light on the floor as a prop if you weren't going to USE it to add drama to his work? EDITING: Your editing is on point; clear control over cutting to the beat of the song. Again, this would have made a great start to a music video.
