Entry Description

This is a trailer for my upcoming short film titled "The Cult Next Door". The documentary exposes the founder of The Institute in Basic Life Principles, Bill Gothard. The cultic group is focuses on authority and control. Gothard and the organization is now facing a multimillion lawsuit for rape and sexual assault.

  • 3/7 10:41 am - This trailer is really well done! Story is clear and the trailer leaves you wanting to see the film! Shots of the town with fog were well shot. I particularly enjoyed seeing the ominous shots and hearing the voiceover at the beginning. It is a great attention-getter and hooks your audience in. Interviews provide good content to move the story forward. Excellent music choice--fits well with the tone. Editing is well-paced. Lower thirds are a tad too small and could be positioned better.
  • 3/6 9:16 pm - Excellent documentary trailer. You did a tremendous job of outlining the investigative story, setting the stakes, and establishing the essential question: how did this happen. Interviews were all well framed and each had a variety of looks due to different locations. Broll was great in establishing the church organization. The beginning shots were especially powerful. Linger on some of those opening shots a bit more because even though they're visually interesting, it took me a second look to determine that you were shooting on the church campus. Get a clearer signage shot. Overall, excellent job.
