  • 3/6 8:08 pm - Nice intro to the show. When the anchors open, don't be afraid to have a little conversation before jumping into the news. Nice news package on the Cubs but the NEWS package should have had more story to it, not a collage of shots to music. People getting interviewed should never be holding a mic. Who's the mystery man in the background of the anchor?! Construction story is good, but again- there needs to be a story. Lots of interviews but a little background from the reporter would help- the reporter can TELL that story. Great B-roll and variety of interviews. Basketball story is again told by the people being interviewed. Sometimes this can be OK, but so far every story on the program is this way. A solid show overall. Good audio levels and good variety of segments. Loosen up a bit and try to be more conversational- your students will appreciate that more than anything. Nice work.
  • 3/3 12:21 pm - Female anchor has a nice personality for on-air. Anchors should consider different options with their hands at the desk other than holding those papers up. When the male anchor delivers his first story and we see the person (I'm assuming the director) in the background, my focus goes right there. "Who is this man?" "Why is he standing over the anchor's shoulder?" A little jarring at first. I like the way you have the monitor with the moving image of the female anchors should and then the OTS graphic on top of that image. Cool effect. Overall, packages are interesting and well-produced. Especially enjoyed the zaniness of the Cubs piece...lots of rack focusing. I would suggest NOT having interview subjects hold their own mics. I would consider a couple of these segments "nat packs." The way we throw it to the package is different than a standard, traditional segment...especially the Deerfield Road piece. Not sure we need to hear, "For Warrior Wake-up, I'm Nick SanJose" for that one. Overall, solid show.
  • 2/25 6:13 pm - Well crafted open to your show. Very large variety of clips to highlight your school. Nice looking OTS boxes. Cubs story: as a Cubs fan, I love this story. :) Fan interviews - have the reporter hold the mic. As a reporter, you should never give up "control" of the microphone. A viewer who is not a fan of the team may not know what is taking place during the game. Provide a VO with your highlights to tell the viewer what is happening. Story needs to have a conclusion to it - what is up next for the Cubs? When do they play next? That kind of information is vital in a news story. Construction story: Good perspective from a business owner. Good interviews with all in this story. The audio from the engineer was low, but I was glad to hear what he had to say about the story. What else could you have shared with us regarding this story, in your voice over? Can you show a map of the affected area? Do folks at DHS all know what area is affected by this construction? Always look at a story from the perspective of someone not knowing anything about your story. I do like how you incorporated a community story into your show. Rummage Sale: Good introduction to the story. Very nice human interest story! Great variety of interviews from many different people. Girls Basketball: 2nd time we see the coach, video cut to b-roll right as the camera started to zoom - bring the b-roll in sooner to cover that up. Good interviews with the students - like that you did the interviews in the gym. This is the type of story where you could mic up a coach or a player for some interesting natural audio that could help to tell the story. While I like having a news package in which the reporter tells the story, your last 2 stories were ones where I didn't feel like information was missing from the stories themselves and had to be told through a reporter. The first 2 stories, I did feel that some information was missing and could have been shared via a reporter standup or VO. Overall, very nice show - was technically clean and stories were in a good order. Is it possible to frame your shots with your OTS boxes so that you don't see Mr. Schwarz in the background?

Positives: overall nice job Good job on nats packages. Sometimes it is best just to let people involved tell the story

Improvements: minor note: Since part of your background animates, I wouldn't have used video in the Cubs OTS. It was too much movement and distracting When supering the Mayor I would done "Mayor ??" and then on the bottom line Deerfield In the construction story I would've tied it into how it's affecting students. Is it making the drive to school a headache? In the shelter story, you could see the mic wire on the woman being interviewed. Next time try and hide it.

Positives: Energy established from the start on the opening montage. Anchors are good and look comfortable.

Improvements: Reporter in Cubs jersey doesn't showcase objectivity. Big no no. Too many still shots.
