  • 4/14 1:57 pm - Positives: I appreciate the consistent tone to this piece. The shots you chose all seem to go together nicely. Footage demonstrated creativity and I particularly liked your rack focus shots. The opening is very strong and is edited well to the music. Improvements: More lighting is needed for some shots--they are too dark--shots of the trophies, musical instruments, guy playing instrument.
  • 3/6 10:01 am - very playful use of focus, great tight shots. little shaky with outside sots.
  • 3/3 2:59 pm - The reel opens strongly with shots capitalizing on some great light and natural beauty. The outdoor fall shots look great. In particular, shots two and three are your best from this scene. The 2nd shot’s strong leading line of the bench with its rust hue contrasts sharply with the wonderful yellowy green of the forest. The 3rd shot creates a nice texture for the minimalist title. Shallow depth of field is used heavily in this work. Because its is, the device becomes less and less interesting as the reel develops. Aside from this, however, a shallow frame reduces your ability to establish complex compositions that use fore, middle, and background, because only one layer of depth is viewable. As such, many images feel flat.
  • 2/28 4:43 pm - Nice variety of shots, the musical instruments stood out in your use of light and guiding the viewer with the rac focus. Many of the other shots overused shallow depth of field. Cinematography is the use of light, and when you showed the viewer what you had in mind with the edit, it worked. When it felt aimless, it becomes challenging.

Positives: Great use of focus. Excellent composition, especially on macro shots.

Improvements: More variety in scene content would be nice ... a few too many nature shots IMO.

Judge 2

Positives: Very nice reel. Music went well with the video and I love the nice tight compositions on things

Improvements: A few shots were either blown out or to dark. Also some shots could have been smoothed out, as they were to shakey. Be careful with racks in and out and using a narrow depth of field. It is really cool when done right but if it takes to long or doesn't land on your subject just right it can ruin the effect.
