  • 4/28 1:43 am - This piece is characterized by excellent cinematography. In addition, each shot contains elements carefully orchestrated to shape the viewer's "reading" of the scene. I really enjoyed the manner in which you used this setting and shot composition to create tension and suspense. This piece is expertly edited. Edits come at just the right time and are executed in a very polished manner. You should be proud of this piece. It reflects your creativity as well as the care you have for your craft.
  • 4/11 8:43 am - The technical abilities are very well executed in this video. It is very clear that the creator of the video is familiarized with the camera equipment. All of the shots were well focused and always had the subject of the shot in clear sight. All of the shots were framed incredibly well. The movement in each of the shots were well done and really contributed to the story as a whole. The slow, cinematic side of the video added the suspense element, which is unusual as most horror movies use quick cuts to add the suspense. This video had a great combination of slow cinematic shots as well as fast, intense shots. The only critique in terms of technical skills, is that some of the shots could have used a bit more light. While the darkness of certain shots make the suspense more apparent, in some of the earlier shots there should be more light to contrast the later darkness. Secondly, the storyline was very well-done. The concept of the story was very unique and unlike any sort of horror short that I have seen before. The writing was very well done. The story was simple enough to comprehend, but complex enough to create interest. I was incredibly impressed by the entire concept. Finally, I loved the acting within the video. The actor was very well trained and fit the part extremely well. The story truly came to life through his acting skills and it made the video very enjoyable and professional quality. As well, the thought put in to the costuming and make up of the short was very well done. Each element contributed to the work as a whole and most people would not think that holistically about their work. Overall, this video is incredibly impressive and a phenomenal submission, especially at the high school level.
  • 3/7 9:04 am - Confusing plot, but interesting and deep.
  • 3/4 1:37 pm - Not sure what I just watched, but I want to see more by the same crew. Some beautiful shots and coloring. The visual of the outsider when he finally comes inside is very creepy and effective! The jarring changes in tone and mood really made this interesting. Some great sound editing.

Positives: Great cinematography. Good editing. Good use of makeup. Good use of creepy guy weirdness.

Improvements: Dramatic acting could be improved. Lighting was a bit dark.

Judge 2

Positives: Extremely strong camera work; nice fluidity with movement and motivated choices for shot composition Strong lighting scheme to reflect mood and tone

Improvements: Sound at times a little distracting (per music and effects); need something more cohesive to thread through and “barge in” at the right moments Ending not entirely clear; and really wondering why a rotary phone was used!
