  • 3/12 10:13 pm - This was such a fun piece to watch. I enjoyed the actor and how much he was into the video. I will say that it seemed a little silly at times and didn't always completely match the feeling of the music. You made some really cool editing choices.
  • 3/11 10:24 pm - I really enjoyed this video's overall energy and concept! I think the video gives away a little more than it needs to at the beginning (Old John/ Young John), as we can infer a lot of these details from your narrative. The storyline is fun and your main actor was great throughout. Sometimes the shadows felt avoidable...but overall, I was entertained throughout!

Positives: 1. The acting and humor was fun and honest. You did a good job visually conveying story elements through body language. You should try making a narrative piece with no dialogue. 2. The pacing of the edit was good, and you cut on beats well. There were a lot of vignettes in the piece which helped carry it along and keep it interesting.

Improvements: 1. Try using available lighting as much as you can before adding light to a scene. A lot of realism is added through lighting. So with that said, when you start to add light to a scene, try to motivate where that light is coming from. Motivated lighting means looking at your location and determine where light would naturally be coming from (window, fireplace, floor lamp, etc) and add lighting that makes it look like that is what is illuminating the scene. 2. Try varying the angles and focal length of your shots. A lot of your shots were wide and relatively at the same camera height. Try to position the camera and choose a focal length (wide or tight shot) that helps communicate your story the best.

Positives: The cuts to the beat on the horn hits in the chorus are well executed and fun. Clever use of costuming and black and white to distinguish between narrative threads. Good transition from old to young at the end.

Improvements: Shooting in black and white is different than shooting in color. Exposure values and ranges are not the same. To shoot in color and then apply a black and white filter in post is not enough. It is necessary to have black and white playback on set to monitor exposure ranges and tones to ensure you're getting what you need. A lot of the black and white images were over exposed.
