Entry Description

This segment looks at the local junior roller derby team. The founder of the junior team and several new members of another roller derby team talk about how this sport would benefit high school students.

It would be nice to interview some of the members of the junior league team to get their perspective. Maybe have someone talk about the rules or goal of the game.
  • 3/9 10:40 am - Make sure your story topic is clear from the beginning - if I hadn’t read the entry description, it would have been a bit before I knew what this story was about. Vary your shots to make it more visually interesting - lots of medium shots in this story. Use the natural audio in your b-roll (the hits, the squeaking of the wheels on the floor, etc) to help tell your story. Let’s hear more of the sounds of the women on the floor and what they are saying to each other.
  • 3/6 3:48 pm - Positives- creative concept for a story and great information presented through sound bites & b roll. Improvements - although there was natural sounds of the practice it would have been interesting to have other sounds like skates on floor, players getting hit, players hitting, etc. The natural audio sounded one dimensional.
  • 2/27 9:45 am - Great idea for a segment. Would be great to start off with the sound of the wheels on the floor. Possibly mic up a skater. Interviews are done well. Overall a good piece that could use more natural audio if competing in this particular category.

Positives: The story line was really good. Good variety of interviews. The timing on the piece was just right, not too short or long Great variety of camera shots

Improvements: The interview at 1:07 is a little out of focus. The only thing missing is a few nat full pops. Possible ideas would be a whistle blowing or sounds of the skates.

Positives: Good soundbites. Nice ending bite with Lisa.

Improvements: Should start with nat sot of skating at the top. Lauren Radusin comes in too abruptly at the top of the piece. Adding a few nat sot pops would have lifted this piece.
