Paper Waste PSA - ID# 136

Glenbrook South
Division: A
Public Service Announcement

Entry Description

Each year, millions of tons of paper are wasted. This short PSA puts in perspective just how much paper that really is, serving as a call-to-arms for the average person to reduce the amount of paper they waste in their lives. Even one piece of paper less is still one more piece not wasted.

  • 3/13 10:57 am - White text over a mostly white background is very difficult to read; long paragraphs are not a great tool to communicate information--a VO would have worked better for this amount of info.
  • 3/13 10:57 am - Opening looks like it's about wasting days/time--if that was the topic this opening would be very effective. Images of crushed sheets of paper on the floor don't connect to anything I see in everyday life. Message is very confusing. Closing gives no resource or suggestion for 'making a difference'.
  • 3/12 10:09 pm - Positives: The simplicity of the idea with the tear-off calendar is very effective. The sound editing was well done for the tearing. The message is clear and the titles were used somewhat artistically. The decision to not use music was actually somewhat effective. The statistics proved to be powerful. Improvements: The whole piece needed more. I think voice over was in dire need in this instance. As effective as the calendar hook was, you're still asking your audience to read way more than they want to. Having some cheerful sounding voice over would really help to clarify the power of your statistics and help to sell your message to the public. Also, you needed to have a website or the name of a non-profit organization dedicated to this cause. All PSAs should end with a place audiences can go for more information or to get help. Also, you need to cite your sources, especially when your statistics are as detailed as they are in this PSA.
  • 3/3 10:06 am - Positives: Nice attention grabber with the calendar. That was a really cool timelapse and sped up movement.
  • 3/3 10:06 am - Improvements: I don't understand the messaging. You bring up the stat of 71.6 million tons. Are we talking world or US? What year is this stat from? Give us a citation. Second, you tie it in with life, turning this PSA from paper to not wasting your life ("why waste all the time"). We weren't wasting time, we were wasting paper. The two aren't interconnected. Third, this is all reading. What if someone doesn't read well, or watches your clips instead. Your messaging is completely lost without voice. Add a narration to help speak to these statements and statistics.
