Entry Description

Nine talented Neuqua students are a part of the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra, or CYSO. The CYSO is a prestigious program for young musicians to participate in. It is very impressive to have so many Neuqua students perform in this orchestra program.

  • 4/25 10:04 am - Great use of nat sound. I would’ve liked to have seen a little more fun and creativity with your shot selection with the broll. Very like shots of various students playing their instruments. A little background noise to your closing voiceover.
  • 3/12 9:13 pm - Strong nat sound open. Narration seems a little sluggish in the reading. Maybe more than three shots at the start, slightly quicker pace. I do like the storytelling here. I am able to understand a story that flows. Maybe these interviews should be in front of the stage, not in front of white cabinets. Feel free to get closer to the performers, almost everything was a wide or medium shot. The audition ending was strange, because I wouldn't think most people who might be in the band or orchestra wouldn't know about this, the rest of the public wouldn't care.
  • 3/2 10:37 am - Nice start with natural sound; variety of shots throughout done well; background for interviews could be more interesting (it's a practice room, but white walls are boring); don't use unmotivated zooms or pans - only move with action; website at end is good touch; reporter track is interesting and goes deeper into the CYSO.

Positives: Very interesting concept and story for your audience. Technically very well executed. Footage and camera work of Orchestra was very well done.

Improvements: A bit more background to the orchestra in the writing would've been nice. Footage of the students from your school actually playing in the orchestra would've been an added benefit.

Positives: Love that you started out the piece with music before heading right in very informative about the program--- your narrative really showcased the benefits young musicians get out of the program. I also love that you had a call to action on the end with a way for people to take action. great job at using classical music throughout the piece great broll. and i really enjoyed the piece and felt i learned about the program and had a take away -- so excellent job

Improvements: Work on the cadence and inflection of your read- the information was great but your read cadence can be more natural i loved your interviews of the musicians-- i would suggest working on the background of the interview so it connects more with your audience.

Positives: Nice opening with nats up full -- just what you want to see in a piece on music. Nice use of nats throughout piece -- that can be tricky, and you did it well.

Improvements: Interviews – would have been a nice touch to have a more interesting background – a music room with instruments in the back? Could have used a little more info on who you are hearing from in track leading up to bites – Grace Kim plays violin with the orchestra. Track is a bit rough – make sure you are really taking in what you are saying to make it sound more conversational – not just reading words.
