Entry Description

The boys varsity basketball team has a new motto which they hope will summarize their season this year: "cut the net". And that's what these hard-working boys intend to do on the hardwood - bring home some big wins.

• 4/10 10:56 am - This is a strong news package that hits all elements; voice-over, B-Roll, well-framed shots, clear audio, a nice example of both student feedback and the coach. While all the elements are there, the producer / anchor’s voice-over leaves me wanting more, in both the opening segment as well as the outro. The players and coaches speak about specific wants and desires for the team; cut down the net, be entertaining, keep this solid group of boys together; include or touch on these elements in your intro and outro so the viewer knows and is reminded of what this team is all about. Overall, this is a very strong piece and I’m confident you are going to continue to produce some amazing work!

Judge 1

Positives: Interesting story and very clear scrap that followed a good outline.

Improvements: Would have liked to have seen more of the team playing an actual game. Video of the practice session became repetitive. Story of the team could've been a little more depth.

Judge 2

Positives: great variety of interviews, good end bite from the bbal player great job of setting up the Cut the Net philosophy immediately with supporting interviews. Great job at having the interviews drive the story instead of relying on VO

Improvements: Would have loved to see you use more camera work--more diverse broll --tighter shots, variety of ball shots, etc I would have loved for you to use music to raise the energy.

Judge 3

Positives: Nice use of nats and video off the top -- seeing the team practicing was a good way to start. Nice use of sound under video -- playing some of the player's bite under vids. Just be careful not to overuse -- people do want to see who is speaking! Shooting the coach with the team playing in the background was strong.

Improvements: Would have been nice to see the team elsewhere -- heading into locker room for instance -- something to differentiate the broll. Would have improved the piece to shoot the team playing an actual game -- not just practice. Would have shot the sound a bit tighter when there was nothing interesting in the background.
