This is a natural sound feature that was used in our school's newscast (Spartan News Now or SNN) and was a soft news piece in our show. We visited Once Upon a Bagel in Highland Park to explore and go behind-the-scenes in the bagel-making process.
Positives: I really liked how you used nat pops as transitions between different elements in the story and to break up the interview. The story line was great. Any questions I might have had were answered well with sound and video. I like how you added the personal element of the family history.
Improvements: While I liked the story, it would have been nice to get another interview such as a worker, customer or another family member.
Positives: Excellent piece. I love hearing the owner say that its important to make sure your product is up to standards. It makes you feel something for the story beyond just the mechanics of making bagels. The video, narration and natural sound are beautifully edited. I love this piece.
Improvements: I think the information about the family's ties to the business could have been added sooner. Just a line about how long the family had this business would be a nice nugget closer to the top of the piece. I love hearing about the father. Just wondered if the broll of the elderly man with the white hair is the father. If not, a family photo or generic video would have worked better. I think better video could have been used at :40. We see the bagels in the foreground and a man waving his hands in the background.. Awkward shot. I'm sure there were much better options.
