Entry Description

This is a story we did for our school news program. We observed that vaping continues to grow in popularity and there does not seem to be any peer pressure or school rules that is slowing that down. We wanted to explore not only how vaping is used by teens but how they use it at school.

  • 4/25 9:55 am - Opening footage not credited. Kevin’s framing is off. No real vaping broll, mostly just wide shots of common areas in your school. Great topic but without interviews from shops and only having one student interviewed that vapes, it doesn’t sell the importance of the topic within your building especially without supporting broll either.
  • 3/2 10:24 am - B-roll could be more purposeful - shots of inside school seem random; computer b-roll is good; interviews are succinct and both sides of the issue are present; Good job providing b-roll of stores; Smoothly integrated sound bites.

Positives: Interesting topic, well written script and very good interviews.

Improvements: Some lighting was inconsistent across the package. Topic needed to be delivered with more background material so audience understood a little more of what was going on.

Judge 2

Positives: the subject is very engaging and intriguing. catchy writing to engage the viewer immediately. great choice of topic. really solid reporting- loved the investigative feel of the entire piece. the broll, the disguised interview, decline for interview-- your broll hiding identities...all of that added to the success of your piece. great job at going at it at all angles

Improvements: loved the concealed identity. i would have liked to hear more from them-- there were a few spots that your audio was cut off or the soundbite was a bit abbreviated. the best advice someone gave me was to listen to my aroll with my eyes closed -- you tend to catch a lot of the cutoffs if you do that

Judge 3

Positives: Nice framing of your interviews -- shot tight and framed up well. Nice use of nats throughout the piece under your track and the interviews.

Improvements: I’m sure it is difficult, but this piece screamed out for vids of teens vaping. Off the top, that would have been strong. Also, I would have led off with the sound of the teen vapor - -that is the strongest element you had.
