  • 4/19 9:43 am - Great variety of shots, especially the perspectives and movement. The travel footage looks pixelated and out of place with the rest of the shots. Great work integrating a variety of different looks and use of light
  • 3/31 4:31 pm - Camera: -The shot under the bean is nice, smooth camera movement! -Showed diverse range of camera shots, compositions, angles, and movements. Movements were at times, a little shaky, so practice with stabilizing your camera. Lighting: -Lighting is generally natural. I do like the flare of light in the shot with the horse. Other times where lights are used, the images appear to be still too dark. Editing: -I think that this reel could be cut down to 1:30. If you really picked your very best shots, I think this reel would have greater impact. There are some shots, like the geese sitting in the pond, which do not show off your skill as a cinematographer and should be cut.

Positives: Good direction on the subjects. Great use of lighting.

Improvements: I would like to see more (wide, medium, tight) sequences in the visual story telling.

Judge 2

Positives: -I'm most impressed that you have some interior scenes on here. It's a lot more challenging to shoot indoors and design your own lighting setup, than it is to just use available light outside. -Where are these epic Planet Earth level drone shots coming from?? Nice work!

Improvements: -Lighting interiors is an incredibly complicated element of cinematography and takes many many years to master, but one thing I would suggest is try to use practical lighting sources as a base and supplement from there. Lamps, chandeliers, sunlight through the window. This is even how we do it on big movies and TV shows. You don't need 50 movie lights to get a scene that looks cinematic, you just need to understand lighting ratios and what looks good to your eye. So try shooting some stuff in your house where you move your lamps around, turn some on, turn some off, and see what happens.

Positives: Some of the shots were just beautiful. I liked that most of the shots were smooth. You showed you know how to use lighting in several shots which brought a nice dramatic feel. Very nice choice in music.

Improvements: It is important to make sure the music and the editing sync better. For example, when a new instrument in introduced in the music that on the first beat a cut or transition happens at the same time.
