How To Fly The GoPro Karma Drone - ID# 3
Glenbrook North
Division: A
Demonstration
Entry Description
I made this video for the How-To unit in my broadcasting class. Having lots of prior experience flying this drone before, I thought this would be a good topic to teach others about while keeping the instruction concise and to the point.

- 4/18 10:44 am - Great Demonstration! There is a lot of information introduced in a short period of time, but it works. The beginning of the video introducing the parts of drone were shot and edited well. Simple stop motion was used tastefully a few times and the yellow overlay was subtle but helpful in pointing the viewer towards the step that was described. The VO audio was mixed well with the background music and drone takeoff audio.
- 3/12 10:54 am - I liked the intro script. Good use of multiple shots of the landing gear for clarity. Music is effective—well balanced and not distracting. This is very thorough—good job! Narration is a bit too fast at times, seems rushed. Might help to have some tips about piloting the drone, or pitfalls to avoid—I understand it can be difficult at first (or at least hint to that).

- 3/8 2:08 pm - what works:
great topic, with detailed information and clear shots-good close ups- to illustrate instruction; nice animation; strong sound with voice over recording; nice green callouts to direct attention; pip while flying idea.
what could make it better:
try not to assume knowledge, for example, 'project' term near beginning may not apply to your audience; watch shot framing shooting off set in background; need cu shots of joystick during pip instruction; overall, felt slightly rushed trying to get all info into time limit.
- 3/7 9:06 pm - Very good work. There is a lot to like in this presentation. Your shots are all very well thought out, properly lit and exposed, and clearly show each step and feature of the drone. Your audio was clear, equalized and properly mixed into your production. The music cue you used was well chosen as it paced your edit well and didn't feel overly redundant. Your titles were clear and your use of rack focusing to blur shots with titling was a nice effect.
I think you needed re-think some of the steps to your process. The time constraints of MMEA worked against you a bit, as I really wanted to see a more in-depth explanation of the drone in flight than what was shown. I think you could have easily lost some time during the setup portion of the video. Losing the shot of the battery level check would have saved your some time and I think you could have also condensed the landing gear and propeller assemblies.
During the flight, the picture-in-picture was a nice touch, but it needed to be made bigger. Upon first viewing, I didn't even notice it was there. You may have also considered flipping the views. In other words, make the drone footage the smaller picture in picture. I realize you want to show off the beauty shots, but this is a how to video and audiences would have been better served to see better shots of the controls in action.

Positives: Good camera shots. Script seemed clear and concise.
Improvements: Narration is read a bit too fast for viewer to understand clearly.

Positives: This was very easy to follow and I found the music and energy in this piece refreshing. The narration was good. The use of highlighting different parts of the drone and the camera was an excellent choice. All in I thought this was an excellent demo.
Improvements: There were a couple of minor editing jumps and the narration at some points sped up.

Positives: Very good step by step demo. Adding the animated drone and controller was effective. The last few shots where you showed the drone take off, land, and actual footage from a flight were excellent.
Improvements: The flying footage near the start of your project wasn't as sharp as it was towards the end. Consider reshooting that.
