Entry Description

In July 2017, the Riverside Brookfield High School football program celebrated its 100th year. To mark the occasion, head coach Brendan Curtin, himself a former player and a graduate of the RBHS Class of 1991, extended an invitation to all former members of the football program to return to the field where they cut their teeth as student athletes. This video highlights the day of The Return, Saturday, July 15, 2017. The submitted video is only an excerpt of a longer program.

  • 3/13 11:39 am - Great locations-- nice job paying attention to the backgrounds of your shots. Great audio!
  • 3/13 11:38 am - Great blend of archival footage and images. excellent graphic continuity with the old headshots inlaid in the uppder right, with professional lower thirds.
  • 3/13 11:38 am - What a great event to commemorate! The interviews of former players were a great backdrop after the current coach established the history of the program along with his personal story.
  • 3/12 12:20 pm - Great use of archived footage! Love the interviews cut in as well.
  • 3/12 11:55 am - This is an interesting idea for a segment and really cool that you thought to capture these moments and preserve them. The old footage is awesome and talking to some of the older players is a nice touch too. I like the addition of what the guys looked like as players added in above their shoulder during interviews. It would be interesting to see how the whole thing plays as you mentioned this is only an excerpt. I always like the idea of sound bites driving the narrative, perhaps some narration would help tie the whole thing together? Overall, I liked this, I'm a sucker for the past and again, I think it's fantastic that you're documenting this for your school and community.
  • 2/28 11:40 am - Good idea for a project. Mic the coach (if possible) Some of the footage is shaky and the back of athletes heads. Nice job capturing alum interviews. Needs something at the end to bring it all together.

Positives: Editing - B-roll used properly and affectively. Camera - Any uneven camera work seemed consistent regarding when it occurs. A fine way to turn a lack of tripod or difficult environmental circumstances into 'style'. Story - For a promotional cut of a longer piece, appropriate elements were selected.

Improvements: Story - All the information was presented up front before settling into anecdotes. Blending the memories into the description and purpose of the event would better lock the viewer into a sense of importance and whimsy. The coach's memory works well to lead, but his interview would benefit from weaving in with the other interviews. Sound - Interview voices are not far enough above the presence. Sounds like onboard mics. Need more clarity from the featured voices. A nice directional shotgun well-placed would do the trick. Too much wind noise. As a promotional piece, this would benefit from a music bed. Lighting - a silk or screen to even out the light in the coach's interview would mitigate face shadows. Small negative lighting efforts would go a long way. Editing - B-roll could afford to stick around longer coach interview. Not necessary to always come back to him. Abrupt ending to the piece.

Positives: historical footage is nice. clean b roll shots

Improvements: opening speech was long

Judge 3

Positives: Good use of graphics Good camera work

Improvements: Could have had a stronger open and close to the video. A little long, could have been condensed to 1:30-2:00 without compromising the story. Would have liked to seen the interviews looking off camera with a more interesting background. Maybe sat them down and taken time with that setup.
