  • 3/3 9:33 am - Story: Pretty solid here. You establish the genre and the general stakes quite effectively. If I have a story critique it’s that it’s a tad vague. There’s some kind of revolution or insurrection. Is it against an actual government? Is it student-led? I can’t really tell if we’re dealing with the limitations of casting, or if it’s actually supposed to be dealing with students. But, like I say, in a broader sense you show good understanding of story. Camera: Lots of good work here. I especially like the close-ups at the top. I thought it was a good way deal with possibly weak or awkwardly cast actors. You got away from that later in the trailer- sometimes to your disadvantage. But a nice variety of shots, compositions, use of selective focus, etc. One shot that could be framed better is when the man in the office stands up- we lose his silhouette, and you could have framed him in front of the shade. Pretty sophisticated symbolism with the rose and the rose on the flag. Lots of good stuff. Lighting: Generally quite good. I don’t love the lighting of your burning flag, but that’s a shot that’s hard get multiple takes of. But overall, your lighting’s good and you show some good understanding of how create mood. Sound: Again, lots of good work here. I think your music level is low at the top, but it of course gets louder. Your dialogue levels are pretty high- especially when the two are sitting at the bar. I would lower it a bit and duck down the music track if necessary. But solid job overall. Editing: Impressive work here. I don’t have any real critique. It flows. The pace is used to build intensity. Your audio editing is used effectively to enhance your visuals. Pretty slick stuff. Final thoughts: Impressive work. I think the story could be more specific, and I’d encourage you to always use adult actors for adult roles if you possibly can. When we see a kid pretending to be a cop or whatever, it immediately breaks any kind of reality you’ve created. Very strong work. Kudos.
  • 2/28 1:31 pm - Super cool idea. I would see this movie. The roses throughout the trailer will make the audience associate roses with the movie- especially with the burning flag pole that was a great touch. Great job using audio effects to let the audience know something is off.

Positives: The continuous shot of the flag is a great feature and by far the best part of the video. I also liked the music choice and editing with the smoke. Well done.

Improvements: The voice-over doesn't "meld" well with the music. Maybe do some re-recording. I can barely see the actors in the most of the scenes.

Judge 2

Positives: Well paced and cut. Impressive visual style and production design.

Improvements: Audio work can be improved – sounds like there was some dialogue replacement done – a little more fine-tuning in the mix could help with the dialogue levels. The narrative is ambitious and complex, but is a bit unclear as a result.
