Entry Description

This is Spartan News Now, GBN's student-produced newscast. This newscast was entirely put together by our Advanced Television broadcasting class, and featured various packages and anchoring, all coordinated by the students in the class. The entire show was just under twenty minutes long, but this is an abbreviated version.

  • 3/10 2:38 pm - Informative intro to program- I liked seeing the actual BTS footage of your filming for this episode used. I also enjoyed the coverage of your stories. There is evidence of strong journalism in this episode- as you cover controversial subjects but remain objective and fair. In the vaping story, I liked that you interviewed a student vaper; some of his sound bytes were really short, and this made the piece feel choppy at times. When your political views segment switched to the "open forum" club advertisement, I think this made for a great 'call to action' within. B-roll in the bagel piece was great, and I think this was a great story to end with. Adding credits to the end would close off the episode well, but I liked the thank yous that your anchors added in.
  • 3/2 11:44 am - Nice preview with 2 anchors and story titles at bottom of screen; nice intro with music; use of over the shoulder shots look professional and pictures are relevant; beginning with vaping story and then politics is good hard news; move to softer news is appropriate for news program format; nice shots in all packages that's please to the viewer; could use credits at end.

Positives: The piece on Trump was done nicely - you covered a lot of different groups. Vaping story - I didn't realize it was so popular with high schoolers I enjoyed the bagel story!

Improvements: When teasing the cheering story - I would've added a nat pop. I also didn't see a school spirit piece during the newscast. A piece about electives was also teased - which story was that? Some of the stories felt a little long. In news, most stories are only 1:30 It's enough time to convey the story and hold the viewers attention.

Positives: Interesting stories and well produced packages. Good graphics and audio support.

Improvements: Some lighting issues on studio work. Some camera shots during interviews could be "tightened" up a bit.
