  • 3/21 1:00 pm - Pros - My favorite shot had to be the profile of the runner at the end, the screen in the woods, or the young woman crying. These were my favorites because they demonstrated your ability to create strong compositions, capture emotion, and manipulate artificial light in a meaningful way. Cons - Your ability to compose your subjects in a way that conveys emotion is no doubt, strong, yet you struggle with keeping them in focus at critical moments. The exposure, particually the highlights, in uncontrolled lighting situations like the auditorium was too high, creating a very contrasty image that lacked detail and stood out in a negative way to the strong character closeups that had a softer, more muted toneality. Although drone shots can be pretty, yours seemed a bit out of place and are in need of lens correction in order to get rid of the wide angle distortion.
  • 3/12 10:59 am - VO was great, shots match well. I like the video concept because the voiceover on top of your shots helps to tell the story. I especially like the shot where the light is shifting on the girl's face. Some of the shots need to be a bit more steady.
  • 3/12 8:16 am - Good use of DOP, needs a bit of work on exposure. You have some nice natural light shots in here too. I like the tracking shot of the guy running
  • 3/1 4:04 pm - Your composition is fantastic, but what I love the most about your reel is your awareness of lighting. Mark of a true cinematographer. The shot of a young woman in a dark room, the light starts on her face and she steps away from the camera into the darkness of the room? Beauty. The tight CU of face withe light flickering on it? Money. Keep filming; you have a great eye!

Positives: Editing was good. I liked the voice over telling the story.

Improvements: Better framing on shots. Using image stabilization could help improve some of the scenes.

Positives: -Great running shots, but remember to be safe! On professional film sets, we have police officers controlling traffic, hired extras driving background cars, stunt drivers driving the car with the camera in it, and the camera/camera operator are fastened to the vehicle. I know it's deceptive, but film sets can be a very dangerous place. Especially when you involve moving vehicles. -You had an effective use of closeups. You really empathize with the characters when we get up in their face like this. And the subtle movement on and off axis really helps tell a story.

Improvements: -There was some subtle, but noticeable, bumps/camera shake that felt unintentional. It's obviously acceptable on handheld stuff, but when you're on a tripod, try to be as smooth as you can. And if you bump it by mistake, try that shot again until you get it right. David Fincher does dozens of takes to get his shots right! -The shot at 1:34 wasn't on par with the rest of your shots. It didn't feel composed and intentional like everything else. Remember, with something like this, the final product is only as good as your weakest shot.

Positives: I liked the audio with the shots, it gave the video a nice feel You had a lot of good motion and use of lighting.

Improvements: The audio did not end at a good ending point. Music can fade out but the narrator just dropped out suddenly and to abruptly. There was one shot in the library that was out of focus. Don't use unintentional out of focus shots in your reel.
