  • 3/5 2:49 pm - Positives: Good shot variety including pan, tilts, ease-ins & -outs; cutting to a camera who is already in a pan movement worked well; good job getting to the broad shot for the final beat. Areas for improvement: Some ease-ins or -outs could be a bit smoother; this will improve with practice.
  • 3/3 8:45 pm - Nice job with a variety of shots. Nice, smooth panning and zooming. Next step would be to experiment with dissolves. Like the timing at the end!

Positives: Nice job!! Overall I think you did a great job. I like that you mixed some close-ups and wideshots and featured various sections.

Improvements: I felt like waiting until :30 was too long to see the entire orchestra Shot at :43 - musicians weren't playing, I would've chosen someone who was 1:07 - I would've kept the camera still, no need for that slight movement

Positives: Good camera work. Nice audio mix. Director did a good job with live material.

Improvements: Some transition shots needed effect like dissolve to match music.

Judge 3

Positives: Good aerial shot at :10. Good shot of horns in action at :29. Loved the wide shot at :41. It would have been better if it was a little earlier so as to give the viewer an idea of the size of this orchestra. Awkward camera pan at :54. The operator must be sure of the shot BEFORE that camera goes hot. The camera shots (like the music) must be ‘flowing’. At 1:04, the castanets were the feature, not the flutes. The camera should have been on the castanets. Viewers don’t want to see performers just sitting there. Nice shot of the drummer at 1:35. Sloppy camera work at 1:48. Again, BE ABSOLUTELY SURE OF THE MOVEMENT YOU ARE ABOUT TO MAKE BEFORE YOU EXECUTE IT. Suggestion: An interesting shot would have been putting the camera BEHIND the orchestra to not only see the conductor’s face but also get some audience shots. Don’t be afraid to play with angles during production set-up. Just give yourself enough time to do it. Creativity is what sets you apart from others filming the same type of productions.
