  • 4/24 11:03 am - + Interguiging opening! Nice visuals and graphics to gain our attention +The animation is very cool! What an interesting way to help tell this story +I'm glad that you interviewed him in his workshop space--nice for a background -It would have been nice to have two cameras for the interview... it's almost as if you only have a b-cam and are in need of an a-cam
  • 4/22 3:28 pm - Excellent story based on a really compelling subject that is not only inspiring in structure, but also in a unique blend of visuals, tone and feel. You did a great job taking a story from Chicago and making it universal enough to be engaged by a wide audience. The use of animation, art and titles really kept the creative vibe moving forward.
  • 3/5 2:31 pm - Positives: Nice use of illustration and animation as b-roll, but would have been better as full-screen without the filler behind; b-roll location and lighting work well, showing the artist in his element; Areas for improvement: 4:03-4:13 has interesting effects, but the music bed change disconnects it from the segments before and after-- those shots could have been mixed in with the rest of the piece, and the story would be improved without that disruption.

Positives: Great use of Julian introduction, footage, editing and music off the top - you definitely had me hooked from the jump. I knew exactly what the vibe of this story was going to be and I was INTERESTED! As much as I usually like to have other people be a part of a narrative - the animation, use of footage, editing/effects etc. really helped move the story along so I didn't find the need to hear as much from others.

Improvements: Julian's story is an inspirational one - you want the viewer to be inspired, I would recommend instead of a profile interview shot - have him look directly at camera so as a viewer I can really feel the passion he has for his artistry. Watch your transitions - at times they are absolutely needed. But at the 4:00 mark after he says "...game worn" this transition seems a bit awkward and not needed. As much as I like the editing/effects use of footage - realize that sometimes less is more.

Positives: Focused and inspirational storytelling. The movie moves well in terms of forward motion.

Improvements: Dialogue levels are inconsistent. Use a volume units meter to check and make sure that your levels are consistent. The score is repetitive and can be more of a storytelling component.

Positives: Excellent editing and use of the effects of the old film style. The use of animation was great and really helped mix up the visuals to create a pleasurable viewing experience.

Improvements: THe audio on the interior interview could have been improved. The sound mixing could have been improved as it seemed at times the music was a bit loud for the narration.
