In 1975, Glenbrook Evening School was created as an alternative program for high school students in District 225. This documentary explores the lives of the teachers and students of GBE. Music provided by De Wolfe Music.
Positives: Excellent use of opening image, information and first soundbite to set the stage for what this narrative is about and why it's important for certain people - it definitely captured my attention, sucked me in and made me interested in hearing more. Very good pacing of the story (especially when each person told about how long they've been coming to night school). The music choice really set the right tone off the top and laid in perfectly throughout the story. Many times one track can't sustain itself throughout a five minute piece. This track did! Story tellers were excellent, I could feel just how much they cared about this particular night school and why it was right for them from many different perspectives. Nice use of Broll and the wide/tight interview shots.
Improvements: There were two areas where the editing could have been better. Early when you went to loop the music I could hear the edit. See if there is a way to smooth that out. Around the 2:30 mark a student is telling a story and there is not BRoll to cover his edits - you need to find cover for those edits.
Positives: The story is clear even though there is a wide variety of subjects. Terrific story. Solid audio recording skills are evidenced in this film.
Improvements: The score is repetitive. There are some odd choices in framing the subjects. Why the close-ups with some parts of their heads cut off?
Positives: Great use of multiple interviews and two cameras for interviews. Nice use of footage during the end credits.
Improvements: Audio mixing of sound could have been improved as some of the interviews seemed low. The composition of shots and focus could have been improved.
