  • 3/2 7:09 pm - Like that you're talking golf- don't see that in high school much. But your talent is reading from a piece of paper he is holding. Very distracting and gives an unprofessional look. If you don't have a teleprompter, maybe think of using cue cards or something to keep the hosts eyes on the camera. Segments were very quick and surprised me each time they happened. Didn't get much notice that a break was coming and it was very abrupt. Same with the ending- the show ended so fast like the host just wanted to get out of there! Slow down, talk slower (might help some of the stutters), and get in a good flow for the show. Loved your set! Very sporty and looked nice. B-roll is well shot, and thanks for using your own! Overall, it's a good attempt and if you slow down, cure the paper reading, and add some spice you'll be right on.
  • 2/28 12:36 pm - ConTalksGolf Episode 1 - ID# 439 Riverside Brookfield STRENGTHS: your production value is really ramped up by that awesome set. Also have huge respect for the b-roll and opening sequence, which clearly is YOUR footage (not stolen from professional broadcasts). Lighting in studio is consistent, camera shot framing is consistent, and audio levels are consistent. IMPROVEMENT: Con needs to lay off the script. It's very clear that the whole show is scripted, which detracts from the experience. Maybe cue cards would have been better? Or best, a teleprompter. Also, Con needs to slow down. Although he's pretty articulate, he was reading his script very fast and at some points his sentences became garbled. Slow down, pace yourself, and keep practicing so that you feel more comfortable on camera. Also, buy a teleprompter with some of that RBEF Telethon money. https://www.prompterpeople.com/ultra-light-Budget-Teleprompter/

Positives: - Host is clearly passionate and knowledgable about the sport - that comes across in his presentation. - I liked having the local update on the school's team as part of this. Expand that even further for future presentations!

Improvements: - Audio mixing could be smoother. A gradual fade of the music down from the open to the bed underneath the host talking would sound much less abrupt. - Review of golf balls would benefit from video examples. Having the sleeve sitting in studio is a good start, but if it was possible to get a camera and show someone actually hitting the balls, that would make a more effective demonstration.

Positives: This set is very well-constructed and nicely lit! Con knows a lot about golf and speaks best when not reading from a script. The cut away shots are nice.

Improvements: Since Con knows so much about golf from his own experience, he shines when speaking extemporaneously, without the script. When he does this, he connects with viewers and shows his enthusiasm for the sport he loves. If there is no teleprompter available, cue cards could help the talent maintain eye contact. Or, perhaps finding ways to cut cameras to the additional shots or b-roll, to help cover moments where talent reads direct from script, or stumbles. Keep an eye on audio levels in the editor. Feels like the intro and outro could be smoother.

Positives: The opening segment of the PGA information gave the right amount context to the relative subject. It was a good set up to seguing into the high school portion of the cast. The use of the graphics fit the script. The second segment on the Srixon golf ball had plenty of in-depth information on the ball. What really helped was when the anchor talked about his personal use of the ball. This is where he sounded confident and knowledgeable on the subject. That would be the point where the viewer would feel there was credibility to the previous information.

Improvements: The host needed to slow down with his read, a teleprompter may be a help in this situation. It would also give a better connection with the audience. When he didn't read there was more of a connection. It felt the information on the ball was more of a challenge to get across to the viewer. It may need to be simplified for the anchor to read and explain to the viewer. Could have been aided with video of the golf ball information or maybe a golf pro with his/her explanation.
