By Eric Pirrie Villalobos, from New Trier HS. For MMEA Film Festival 2019 consideration - "Cinematography Reel" category
Positives: You have a lot of great compositions here with nice use of movement, depth of field (especially in hand clap shot) that really show you have a nice cinematic eye Color grading looks pretty natural and well done especially on the boy at the front door footage and the guy walking with the laptop throughout.
Improvements: I know you have a few regular motion (24 fps) shots but the VAST majority of your shots are slow motion. Although slow motion looks beautiful there are few too many slo-mo shots included here. Would like to see more of what you do with real time camera work if I was hiring you as a director of photography. Your lighting on interiors is alright but it could use some work to brighten up and bring more cinematic life to your shots. Specifically the kitchen scene with the boy being slammed against a wall and the girl leaving the boy's room at :55. The lighting is a bit flat. Again not terrible but could use some work with backlighting and rim lighting.
Positives: your use of slow motion what is strong, but maybe too much of the real is in slow motion. You want to make sure your cinematography real highlights all of your abilities as a Director of Photography. The framing of the boys running down the stairs and the color in that shot is flat-out professional. many of the shots are framed with clear intention and you use your camera as a painter would use their paintbrush. Your camera work adds to the story.
Improvements: Couple things to improve on would be to make sure you have a variety of work in your reel. For 1 minute long real there's just too much slow motion use. that should be an aspect of your filmmaking, but there needs to be more to it than just smooth slow motion shots. In terms of editing I think the use of a whip pan was great but I'd like to see more of that in this style of reel.
Positives: Nice job using the green screen. You did a great job moving the foreground and background together to create the illusion that you made. I liked a lot of the camera movements.
Improvements: I gave you a lot of credit for the green screen effect but you do need to work on making sure all of the background is out of the foreground image. Around the guys foot was some area that did not get keyed out. I didn't feel like the music was a good pick, but that is more of personal taste and you were not docked for it.
