Entry Description

My project is about the day to day routine and struggles young, single moms go through. I want my documentary to capture the progression and mental journey single moms go through while learning how to be a parent and raise their child on their own.

  • 4/26 7:10 am - Love the message, but let your audience know from the start the direction you want to take your story in. First line – I never thought it would be this hard…. What the message don’t be a single mom, help. To long on some shots
  • 4/26 12:51 am - *Strength: 1. Important/relevant topic 2. Video quality 3. Lighting 4. When used, b-roll was meaningful *Areas on which to work: 1. Work on incorporating audio (nat sound, in particular) that will give the viewer a richer understanding of your topic. For example, you have b-roll of the woman preparing breakfast and then sitting with her child, but your viewers do not get a full sense of this environment because they cannot hear what is going on. 2. When working on future pieces, place additional emphasis on providing the viewer with more b-roll related to what is being talked about in your audio track. Also, don't hesitate to shoot an action from different angles. For example, you would have increased the editing options available to you had you shot the woman preparing breakfast from several different positions. Even going in for some close ups would have been useful.
  • 4/23 2:06 pm - I like the start of the story with all of the stats. I think it adds a solid layer to it. Try to keep the camera steady. At times there are shots that are shaky, and they take away from the story. Try to use more natural sound from the story. An good spot you could have done this was when she was shaking the bottle. if you put a mic close to this it will give you a good break in your story. Watch the framing of the interview, try not to put them in the middle of the shot. The black spot in the video can be removed by just double checking the video. I like the story, I just wish there was just more to it, by adding additional interviews and more layers to the story.
  • 4/10 2:47 pm - The story that is told is intriguing and has many great visuals to help. I really liked the creative choice of starting with the sleeping mother/child and bringing in the interview audio before showing the interview. I don't think the text slides at the beginning are necessary, especially with such a short piece. Watch your framing during interviews so there isn't so much headroom. There is a very long empty video(1:27-1:32) before the conclusion that I am assuming wasn’t intentional, so be sure to watch your video multiple times before exporting the final version.
  • 3/10 11:30 am - COULDN’T READ FIRST 2 TEXT PAGES, NOT UP LONG ENOUGH. ODD THAT A NATSOT PKG WOULD BE SILENT FOR FIRST 12 SECONDS. NO REASON TO CUT INTO HER HEAD DURING POURING SHOT. JUMP-CUTS - :32, :38, 1:09, 1:17, others. INEXPLICABLE BLACK HOLE 1:27-1:34. V/O TALKS ABOUT GOING TO BED WHILE WE SEE HER DANCING IN LIVING ROOM. ESSENTIALLY NO NATURAL SOUND IN THIS PKG.
