Entry Description

Anderson Pet Shelter is a humane pet shelter based in South Elgin, Illinois. I got the chance to speak with two workers on the beauty of working there and more importantly the significant impact of adopting a pet from a shelter. To the workers finding an animal a "forever home" is the most important task at hand.

  • 3/1 10:07 am - Starting with talking head on-camera reduces viewer interest; b-roll over her bite to start. :12 into a story at a shelter and I can't hear the typical natsot of barking & associated chaos at a shelter under her bite. :24 - jump-cut. All interviews should be generally from same location, and most likely from inside the shelter - yes, even with noisy chaos in background. At :30, I have no idea where he is at - relative to an animal shelter. Again, natsot should be throughout the entire piece and faded up or down as needed - not absent from under bites and then suddenly popped-up for a nat break. When subjects are walking, have them walk toward the camera; faces are more interesting than backsides. Needed walking shot higher in story than 1:31. Interviews visually solid & good audio.
  • 2/25 6:37 am - Interviews were shot well and audio was clean. You have a ton of great b-roll. Editing pace was also very comfortable. The only area of improvement was the integration of the nat sound from some of the clips; you had a lot of sound bytes that cut in, but they needed some kind of fade up and fade out, because cutting in the sound seemed too abrupt. The last shot of the piece was very meaningful and well-chosen. Good work here.

Positives: I like the natural sound pops of dogs barking n between sound bites. Love the unique and interesting shots of the animals.

Improvements: Start story with video and not an interview to set the scene. Focus on editing your soundbites and natural sound. Levels were a little hot.

Positives: -You had a great mix of shots! Your interview subjects were in different environments. You had a good mix of animals and people. You also matched up your visuals with what the soundbites were saying, which was great. At the end, it was also evident you purposely avoided a jump cut by letting the woman walk out of frame! Great thinking. -Your story was really clear and easy to understand, and it also flowed from beginning to end! You can tell you asked great questions and had an understanding of how to move the story along and not just keep it singular throughout.

Improvements: Ways to take your pkg to the next level: -The audio was a little sporadic. You had great sounds, with workers talking, cats meowing, and dogs barking. You want to make sure to fade that audio up and down, so it sounds a little more natural and not so jarring. -You also want to make sure you're using nat pops purposefully, meaning what we're hearing is crystal clear. You had a pop in the middle that wasn't so evident what the sound was. But really, really great job of weaving the sounds throughout the whole pkg!

Positives: The pacing of the story works very well--it allows the viewer to digest the information, but it doesn't drag. Additionally the variety of the broll keeps the piece interesting to watch.

Improvements: One thing that could be improved is making it clearer what the shelter is--after watching it, I'm not even sure of the name. Additionally, the nat sound in this piece is very jolting. The idea is good, but it should be smoothed out--fading it up/down for longer and extending the room tone so everything ties together.
