The DHS Bowling had had its ups and downs, but nonetheless, the team is a great source of community and fun for players.

Get more b-roll. As someone who bowls in a league, there are a lot of stories to be told visually and a map of a plan of attack with putting the camera at different vantage points or just structuring this better would have travelled a long way. If you are an underclassman, I know you can produce a better piece, and if you are a senior, best wishes and congratulations.

The introduction really didn’t set up the story. What (insert any activity or event here) “has had its ups and downs but they have high hopes.” – it is to generic, yes, I knew the story was about bowling, but it didn’t say anything else. Tell me they are underdogs, tell me they have come a long way in 1 year, I just really wasn’t sure what I was supposed to think, and then you lead with an interview about a guy who says he is not that smart and not that good of an athlete, and that one of their best players came on the team 3 weeks ago, I am not sure what to think about this team. Then later he refers to the team as a joke, and again I am not sure what that means is that because they joke around a lot, is that because no one has any respect for them,
I think a picture was painted of this team that may or may not really represent who they are. As a creator of this news story you need to have a vision of where the story should go, and what you want to communicate and that vision is shaped by the types of questions you ask, and the way you coach your talent as they give you answers. I feel like that is probably the skill you need to work at the most. Because generally your camerawork (though shakey at times), sound, and editing seemed ok, it was just really hard to know where your story was going and what you were trying to say.
When conducting your interviews, try and change the location, it will make the story have a more diverse look, and keep your audience engaged more easily.
There is another bowling story in these news packages and take a look at it, I think you will see how the writing and the direction of the talent will change the outcome. You will get there, just don’t overlook the importance of planning out your story and deciding what all the pieces will be before you grab your camera.
