Entry Description

The Chicago Architecture Open House is an annual event where the city's hidden gems and stellar high rise skyscrapers are open to the public. Alex Lang and Chris Nosewicz ventured to the city to capture the magic over multiple days to get a feel for what the city is really like. As Jeffrey Taylor says in his interview, "Chicago's main contribution to the world is architecture" and this package shares this contribution to MMEA

The cathedral organ nat sound pop was blown out. Camera work on the exteriors of the buildings were your strength, but I'm wondering why there weren't more of them. I think you could have taken some wider pans of the skyline, a few nice tilts from street level to the top of a building, or again some pans from the roof top across the skyline. The interior interviews needed lighting; too dark.
  • 2/22 9:36 am - Lost me opening with a sound bite on-camera; keep the bite but show b-roll of this amazing architecture. Visuals that are so beautiful benefit from frequent dissolves between shots, not cuts, to maintain a smooth, slow-paced flow. Why come back to her on-camera at :13 for not even one second? Once she’s been established the first time on-camera, there’s no need to return to her video until maybe one last time at the end. Vehicle crossing camera at :20 made a great, natural transition. :28 - only go to black at the end, not in the middle of the story. He wasn’t on-camera long enough to establish first bite. Awkward dissolve to near-black at :53. :54 - must crank-up iris when shooting directly at windows; or crank-down iris if the beauty of the windows is what you wanted to play-up. 1:08 - not sure what I’m supposed to see here. Fade-up organ, don’t suddenly pop-up. Not enough natsot pops. Only 1:24 TRT, with so many wonderful examples of architecture in downtown?
