Three Cups - ID# 515

York
Comedic Narrative

Entry Description

In this animation and live action hybrid, a cynical high schooler (played by Joe Estephan) is challenged by his friend (Ian Williams) to take a closer look inside three ordinary cups. What he ends up seeing, however, is anything but ordinary. A major goal in this project was to gradually build up a hard-hitting and ironic punchline. The plain setting and flat camera angles were also purposely used to clash with the film's absurd concept. We hope that you enjoy this brief and experimental comedy!

  • 4/20 2:42 pm - Successful - Very interesting visuals and cool animation. Clearly a lot of time and skill went into the animation. The concept was clever in that it gave a reason to go from live action to animation with the intro and outro. Needs Work - As a comedy, it wasn't all that funny. The live action scenes and dialog (and the joke) felt more like an excuse to showcase impressive animation. This felt more like an animator's demo reel than a narrative film. Not bad, just out of place here.
  • 3/6 11:40 am - Some really phenomenal animation done in this film. Kudos to the artist for creating it. However is far as a comedic film I believe this misses the mark on overall comedy and plot. The editing is great in the dialogue scene with the over-the-shoulder shots and the j cuts, but I would want to see much more development in the plot for film at the state level.
