  • 4/22 10:51 pm - Successful - Good acting. Good editing and use of music. Needs Work - This feels like a drama film with a random comedic ending. That shift in tone is confusing, probably because the rest of the film is too dramatic by comparision. There's also a lack of character development for Andrew, as well as a lack of setup for the big joke at the end. Unfortunately, the joke isn't all that funny, and the violence feels unwarranted.
  • 3/6 11:44 am - I like the pacing of the film overall. The slower pace of the film makes the ending have a great payoff. There is a slight hiss throughout the entire production that is a little distracting, but overall the audio work is solid. Great acting throughout the piece as well. I really like the middle part and find it humorous how the adult and child want to approach the situation. It really shows the divide in the generations.

Positives: Super good story--just how you'd want it to end yet you don't believe it could end that way and you did anyhow....nice job. Mechanically very well done--editing was great and kept the continuity of the story well. Really good job.

Improvements: There were some very creative shots here....the shot through the crack of the door was clever but a little contrived--it's a hard one to do, it would have been better if not followed by the door blinging on a blank shot...too much in a row.

Positives: The overall production value was solid- good sound, camera work, lighting and compositions. The music is a nice touch. A clear understanding of the technical aspects of filmmaking are shown. The casting is done well, which boosts the production value quite a bit. Likewise, the characters played their roles well.

Improvements: The story & characters were a bit too simple. Not enough layers to make it them compelling. This is more of an issue with writing. Example: if the Dad was willing to punch the bully himself, his character could've been more neurotic, off-the-rails, silly and/or impulsive. The character didn't match the actions. There were a lot of missed opportunities to throw in comedy- even without adding more the story itself. The story's mood feels like a drama for the first half, throws its first joke around the 2 min. mark, then throws in the final jokes at the very end. A more exaggerated, comedic world could've been built to make the plot ultimately more satisfying.

Positives: I really appreciated the complete tonal change that takes place about a minute in. I thought for a moment I was watching a film from another category and that made for a more engaging experience. Excellent use of music: The film opens with a somber, darker tone, facilitated by that emotional score. From there it takes a pleasant, more light-hearted turn. The music helps quite a bit with the overall tonal transition. Very tight and professional editing. There were also a couple really creative shots that gave the film some nuance and texture. I loved the simplicity of this story and that it culminates with a literal punch that looked and sounded great. The tag with Andrew's mother was also a delight. I'm very curious about how Thomas' original story went. Well done all around!

Improvements: While the generational divide between father and son on how to handle a bully provided some great comedy, I do feel like there was potential to explore a bit more about that. Maybe a couple more jokes in that vein could have been featured before they take their trip to Andrew's house. It might have aided the story if you had dove a bit deeper in Andrew, and made us hate him a little more. Sure, the beating spliced into the intro was sufficient, but some audio of Andrew's verbal bullying would've possibly delivered a bit more on that.
