  • 4/29 8:04 am - Keepers: The broll for this piece is really strong. I love all of the phone footage of your mom and the way you pieced that through the second half of the piece. It's not the most polished but for this type of documentary, it shouldn't be that way. The interview was done well in terms of story editing and you did a good job of setting up your relationship with your mother and how it changed throughout your life. The music was well chosen and the change from party music to more a more heartfelt song worked well. Improvements: Pace the photos of the party a bit better. Some of them weren't on screen long enough. And a lot of them moved to much. Slow the movements down a bit and vary that movement throughout when showing photos. The constant photo changes and movements...particularly at the beginning of the piece got distracting. Work a bit on your interview framing. The basics are there, but think about what's behind your subject. The best interview looks contain background with depth and color. Your background is a bit flat and boring. I realize it's probably done at your home, but don't be afraid to create a set for your interviews. Take that extra time to make the production value the best it can be.
  • 4/15 1:39 pm - Compelling story of this Mother/Daughter relationship starting with the birthday party and then examining the backstory of how this relationship has changed throughout the years. Visuals are impressive and use of images throughout it smooth and effective. The subject interviews of the mom and the daughter could have been shot better and needed to be to match some of the very striking b-roll and shot variety throughout.
  • 3/10 3:26 pm - A very sweet story that had quite a tone change in the middle. I really appreciate that the overall film was not one flat toned even though it's only a five-minute documentary. I appreciate the storytelling of this party and I think you did a fantastic job with the types of interviews and the amount of interviews as well. I realize that some people had to shoot on phones this year so in the future if you have access to a camera with a little bit different quality I think some of the interviews would have helped with the different tools
