A trailer for To Fall in Love and Break it Off (Now Available to stream on YouTube) created for the 28th annual MMEA festival.
Positives: You have some really good shots throughout that grab your attention. Your actors seem to have a lot of great charisma and good chemistry together. Ultimately, I would be interested in watchin this film which is the intention of any trailer, good work.
Improvements: The story is a bit unclear and I think that is because there are a lot of extra elements that have been thrown into this trailer that make me feel as though I don't really know what the core of the story is about. It great to have that in your film but you don't want the trailer to be going in too many directions so that the audience gets lost. The story seemed to be a love story between two people getting together and breaking up, but then it seemed to have some very deep rooted interest in exploring serious depression issues from the girl's side and then some issues with the pressure of a musician's life. Its ok to explore those themes in your film but I would try to focus more more on gently teasing these things in your trailer rather than pulling us so much into either struggle.
Positives: Excellent use of camera movement and light to give the piece distinct visual language that feels fun and energetic – like the characters.
Improvements: Some of the audio in the middle of the piece felt distant and – I would recommend it be brought forward in the sound mix, along with a reduction in echo/noise. From a narrative perspective, though the premise of the film is clear, I felt that the last piece of audio from Nick – "This is what being in a band is all about" – didn't really tie in with the rest of the trailer. It might be worth introducing visuals of Nick in his band earlier on. Potentially, re-recording voiceover with Nick to connect "being in a band" to "being in a relationship" might tie the whole piece together?
Positives: I would watch this movie when and if it comes out. Every teenager in America can relate to this premise line. Many contestants believe the only way to get attention or create drama is through a thriller but what's more relatable and dramatic than love?? I think the editing throughout this was spectacular and the song fit the overall mood perfectly.
Improvements: For the portion where the girl on camera has a sad expression you could cut back and forth between that clip and the girl hysterically talking to the guy to make it feel like she's remembering what they went through.
