  • 4/28 10:05 am - Great information, interviews really supported the topic, but could use some more reaction to what practices and games might look like and how students and even parents feel. Keep up the good work!
  • 3/28 9:07 pm - Use a tripod when recording your b-roll so that your shots are steadier. Nice job getting an interview with Matt Troha. Good use of natural audio throughout your story. At the end of your story, when your VO ends, keep that b-roll up for at least 1-2 seconds before it cuts to black. In this case, I think it went to black frames before your VO ended.

Positives: Nice job telling the story with a variety of interviews between coaches and athletes. You did a great job incorporating different sports and adding pictures where you didn't have video.

Improvements: The nats under the track are a bit high, so its hard to hear the reporter. Try to have a little more energy when you are recording your tracks. Sound interested in the topic. Don't rush your words. You don't need to be so formal with your writing. Instead of giving me the specific date of the IHSA meeting, you can say just a week ago or a year after sports were put on hold. Think about how you would say it out loud in a conversation. Try to shorten this a little. In a real newscast, you might get 1:15 for this topic

Positives: - Your story had great flow. I love how you got so many different voices -- IHSA official, coaches, players, etc. The balance of reporter track and soundbites was pretty good. Love the distanced boom mic too. - The intro shot and nat pop was tremendous. It really set the stage for what you were doing.

Improvements: - This story needed more sequencing in your shot composition and editing. You start with the great close-up and go to a wide shot. Excellent. But from there, you have a bunch of wide shots that make it a bit confusing. This is a good opportunity for medium and close shots elsewhere to piece the whole practice together. Think: close up on coach, medium shot of players, close up of player looking on, etc. - When shooting interviews, try to flip the sides they are on. If you frame one on the right side looking left, shoot your next on on the left side looking right. This helps with continuity. Also, try to use the rest of your shot to help tell the story. Maybe an athletic logo or the school name instead of walls.

Positives: -Good framing during interviews. -liked the creativity used in the shots of the football field. Well done

Improvements: -Try to sequence clips so they tell a visual story. (going from a wide shot to a close up shot of the same subject) -I highly recommend starting the story a personal perspective... focusing on one student and have them share their experience first... then explain how their experience fits into the overall story.
