Mon Cheri, a direct translation to the French phrase “my darling.†Showcasing an original choreography performance, set in a rustic and raw warehouse in the heart of Chicago.
Positives: I felt the images were set to the song very well. The camera work was excellent I enjoyed the high angles.
Improvements: I didn't understand the relationship between the dancers. Toward the end it got better. I enjoyed watching both dancers, I wonder if starting with single dancers and building to two would have increased the drama.
Positives: The choreography and dance performance are fantastic. Half the battle is finding something interesting to point the camera at. The performance had lots of movement and vibrancy from start to finish which kept the energy up for the duration of the video. The camera had life and movement all it's own. It was the third dancer in my opinion! It kept the composition shifting but always rooted to the same theme. Excellent camera work.
Improvements: The first thing I would critique a bit is the editing. For a project like this, the dancing is the storyteller. It would have been nice to feature some longer uncut sequences. Sometimes it felt like you were piecing this together from several performances. Which, of course, is how it's done. But you don't want the audience to know that! There's a facemask visible at 00:00:55. It's tiny. it's only there for a split second... but it's totally and completely distracting. That's art department. And it's important! But overall, this is a really cool video.
Positives: Very ambitious to do a dance music video, and you largely pulled it off. The choreography was beautiful, and the location and use of available light were fantastic. Professional quality camera work. Nothing looked shaky, and some nice thought given to varying image size and compositions.
Improvements: It's a bummer to ding you on story. But I hate to say I got bored about half way through. That could just me as not a huge fan of modern dance. It was good though that the song wasn't that long. I was just really wanting some b-roll, anything to give me a break from just being in that space watching the dancers--who again, did a fantastic job. Some of the editing choices could have been smoother, and might have helped with varying the rhythm and the pace.
