  • 4/30 12:56 pm - This is a three camera shoot with a floor camera. Camera changes were well motivated and captured the essence of the game. The floor camera quite often needed to do a better job of framing up the shot. We saw 3/4ths of the athletes, too much of the windows at the top of the bleachers and not enough of the athlete’s feet. There was a bit too much motion by the floor camera operator. Just set your shot and let the players play the game. You don’t need to tilt up and down with the basketball’s motion. Minimal use of graphics in this production. The graphic identifying the two teams is up in the right corner of the screen. When there is a full shot on the screen, there isn’t a problem with this positioning. When you cut to a medium shot, the graphics quite often become a problem as they cover up an athlete’s face. It was helpful to have the score on the screen and it updated regularly. Also helpful to have a clock. I think that the graphics would be more effective along the bottom of the screen. As a side note, it is a TREAT to see fans in the stands! There was not a clear definition of roles for the commentators. They interrupted each other at times and I wasn’t sure who was play-by-play and who was color. They had good energy and they did an excellent job of using the players names.
  • 4/29 10:24 am - For the play by play and commentary, there is normally one person who takes on the play by play responsibility and the other that takes on the commentary. Because no one had a clear role for that, both only did play by play. One was with one team, one was with the other. That isn’t a normal approach. Both seemed to hesitate and not clearly begin each play. It was like they were playing catch-up. I would have loved to have heard more about what we were watching, why it is important to people, and the programs the school has. I did however like when the people called the names of the players. Im sure that has impact later as they re-watch it. There was one simple graphic – the scoreboard. It would have been cool to have a lower third or a side-graphic built for each player as they scored or touched the ball. The scoreboard is clean and a nice touch, but not a basketball scoreboard. You see that style of a scoreboard used more for volleyball or wrestling. We had one replay. I liked it. I wanted to see more. If you had the opportunity, take it. Perhaps you could transition the replay with a transition graphic or logo to clearly show that this is a replay. And for cameras, I liked the various angles. I was very pleased to see personality and not just watch this from a high perspective. The left baseline camera had a clear white balance difference from the other camera. From what I could tell, we had at least three cameras, so that is awesome. For the wide shot that follows the action, try to keep the action in front of the movement. The camera would often have trouble keeping up with the pace of the action and the ball.
  • 2/26 10:07 pm - Hero camera should keep-up with the hero. Be great to have at least one floor camera. 0:31 - should cut to tight camera. 0:43 - there's the floor camera. 0:54 - cut to wide camera earlier. By this time we should have seen a crowd reax shot. Hero camera now getting better shots; challenging with such a crowded floor. 1:28 - if it means going hand-held/off the shoulder, floor camera should be positioned so that no other camera ops. are in the shot. Since there's so much more time during action than competitive games, P-B-P & color should be going to profiles about players & their schools/programs rather than continuously waiting for the action to "catch-up" to the commentary. On-air talent should toss to replays. Still no crowd or cheer squad reax. 2:37 - talent resumes play call but director hasn't switched the shot yet. Again, this type of event coverage really begs for frequent crowd reax shots. Talent had good energy.
