  • 4/30 12:57 pm - There appear to be two camera angles in this broadcast. They are used well and add a lot of visual interest to this broadcast. For the most part the sideline camera held a steady view from that vantage point. Love the replay logo! Very effective, clean and interesting. The announcers spoke clearly and definitely were invested in this game. It seemed like they were a bit unsure of their roles. For a while one of the boys would be play-by-play and then suddenly the other boy would start doing play. They also spoke over each other which is distracting. It didn’t feel like they were an announcing team and the natural conversational quality between on air personalities was missing in this broadcast. I understand the natural enthusiasm high school students have when it comes to announcing a game where their friends are playing. Try and tone down the cheerleading and do more play-by-play calling. I do understand that this is easier said than done. I absolutely loved when they made reference to the replay that was being shown. WELL DONE! Graphics are clean and neat and I like the use of school colors. The WATV logo gets lost as all you really see is the WA. I understand that the school colors are maroon and grey. It might be helpful to darken up the grey so that the TV stands out a little more.
  • 3/4 7:37 pm - 0:00 - the reason there was no jump-ball to start the second half is because high schools & colleges begin the second half (of every game) with an in-bounds pass; has nothing to do with COVID. (Years & years ago, players & coaches complained frequently in high school & college games that referees were, essentially, awful at tossing-up a jump-ball fairly & accurately. So they changed to a jump-ball only to start a game so that a bad toss-up was highly unlikely to affect the outcome.) 0:15 - backboard shot works better with play at the basket. 0:30 - not sure if this is the wide or tight up-camera but body parts are out of the frame; okay, now we see it was the tight up-camera, but that's a challenge to follow quick action that tight. Replay effect is....effective. But replay shot is too tight; as soon as guard crosses the timeline, the shot should widen completely; nice job staying with the collision to the floor. 1:02 - nice shot of coach coaching player is obscured by graphic. 1:29 - again, key action is obscured by graphic & too-tight framing. 1:45 - talent stepping on each other frequently, need to establish rhythm. Take replay after ref clears the shot. 2:27 - ball leaves frame on key highlight. Talent have great energy, but stepping on each other numerous times. For rookie talent duos, it's easier to train them to split jobs & dedicate themselves to one job only: one talent does P-B-P only, the other talent does color only.

Positives: *Good job right off the top telling us why there's no jump ball. Awareness of the rules is important. *The energy in the game comes through. I can hear that the announcers want to be there.

Improvements: *I'd suggest to the announcers to not go as fast. I can hear the announcers thinking because they're talking so fast. When the pace picks up, there are some hesitations in the fast pace by the announcers as they figure out who's doing what on the floor. A little more control over what they're saying would go a long way. Also, it's not clear what role each of the (three?) announcers is playing. *I found the cut as the ball crossed midcourt early in the segment to be odd. It was almost a jump cut to the game camera. Also, I thought the game camera was a little too tight sometimes.

Positives: Good camera work & replays. Lots of enthusiasm which helped viewer follow each play of the game.

Improvements: Cleaner narration, could use more color commentary, don't be afraid to fill silences. Want to build that chemistry between on air voices so it feels more genuine.

Judge 3

Positives: I liked the directing it was well paced and not too many cuts. The score strip graphic on the lower third is very sharp, not too big and works well. I really like the replay animation graphic. Having a high angle cam behind the basket is a nice angle to have especially if you wanted to add any graphics at the bottom of the screen such as additional stats, maybe a coming up next promotional graphic, etc. Nice work!

Improvements: At the beginning of the clip, the camera that was following the ball was the tight cam (cam zoomed in high angle), that is a nice shot to use once in a while to change up the pace, but mostly keep the ball following on the game cam (wide-shot high angle cam). The second replay was executed right after the play which was really nice to see a replay cued up that quickly, however it may have been too rushed, as the handheld camera on the far end was shooting it and was blocked by the referee, all while the cam was trying to zoom all the way in down the court and almost missed the block, a better angle would have been from the left court handheld, or even the tight camera. Talent was a little over modulated when they were excited, and talking over each other a little bit, besides that their energy helped keep the game entertaining. I would also suggest to add one or two mics pointed at the court for a more balanced mix of announcers and court nat sounds (natural sounds on the court such as sneaker squeaks, ball bouncing, etc.)
